OK, so we now have it confirmed several times that Fredericksburg is our next target. Dan posted this on his blog today:

(And may I remind my active readers that it sounds like the missing material is similar to the material I found in France… and if you’ve forgotten about that then this may jog your memory.)

I also received a reply back from a PM to Dan about the cipher solution:

Thank you! It's there, I can almost see it - sorry for being dramatic, but this is the second part of the cache I found in France.

There's always a 2-stage process, a bit like shedding skin, but in this case an identity.

One iteration gets you a key to something else, in this case the book. Don't be fogged off by the first thing you find. It is meant to check whether "you are who you claim you are," and is part of the process - call it a transitional identity. Who ever this was left for was quite an important person, so this book will lead you to something (always close by, and a quick turnaround). This new item, when combined with whatever is in the book will pinpoint the cache.

And I don't know why I didn't see this earlier. Going back to Fredericksburg, looking for East Main Street and North Washington, there appears to be a quaint little book store right smack on the corner.

Looks and is described like a place I'd hide this book.

Of course, it could still be one of the many antique shops or German restaurants around there as well, but I don't think so.

So, do we know anybody in the area to fetch the cache?

Nothing yet, but that doesn't surprise me looking at the shop.  I should probably just call them, but I always feel a bit foolish cold-calling places like that.  Aside from confirming the book's location I don't know if it would get us any further either, as it sounds like it should lead to the actual cache nearby.  I've been trying to find someone to recruit in TX to go after it, but anyone I can find is usually hours away by car.

I've got the book and am trying to figure out what next. Nothing obvious in the book.

The last unused bit from the french cache that I can think of is the '49' written in UV ink on the Queenie.  Anything on that page maybe?

Hayder, eh?  Not the first person I would have guessed.  What's the next clue?

Okay, perhaps I'm not as defeated as I thought I was, but there's no way I could have done this in one trip anyway.

Once I got the books home, I pulled out my handy blacklight (sign of a misspent youth) and examined pages 49 of both books.  The first one had the page number circled.  The second one has an address in Fredericksburg, plus a notation:

A=?
+44 207 193
7442
?=

The telephone number leads me to Surer Risk, but I'm not sure what to do from there.  Any ideas?

The good news is that we got 52 mpg on the ride home.  Wink

Okay folks, armed with what I think is the location of the storage place, the unit number, and (hopefully) the combination, my family and I will head back to Fredericksburg on Saturday morning to continue the search.  I'm much more heartened than I was the other day and feel confident that soon the contents of the cache will be in my hot little hands.  I'll update when I can on the board, and if you've got Twitter I'll try to keep that updated, too -

In the meantime, happy Fourth of July to those on this side of the Atlantic, and Merry Friday to those on the other.   Wink

We are back from Fredericksburg with the cache and a bunch of peaches.   Cheesy

Here's the whole story, from top to bottom:

We got to the book store and I asked if they had a package for Casper Ebersbach. The lady gave me a package with his name on it in a Genuine German envelope!

We then proceeded to spend an hour in the car leafing through the pages and finding absolutely nothing. NOTHING. I kept going back into the store and asking if they had books for any name I could find in this thread, in Dan's blog, on Violette's dream, etc. (I ended up using 60% of my battery life on the phone's GPRS connection. No Edge!) No dice.

We got frustrated and decided to go to Der Lindenbaum for dinner. Only they're not open on Tuesdays. Doh!

So we went to the brewery. *hic*

After a beer and a strudel and many checkings of Twitter, forums, etc., MrToasty told me to check page 49 since it had been mentioned in the same solve as Caspar Ebersbach. There was a name on that page, so we went back to the book store and asked if they had a package for Henry Schultz (or whoever it was). The guy said no, but the problem was they did have a package for _someone_ but they had orders not to give it to anyone but them.

So basically, I needed to go in and say, "Hi, my name is so-and-so. Do you have a package for me?"

So I looked real cute with my list of names, going through them one by one. I even tried, "I'm... Ron... Burgundy?" But when I got to, "My parents had a sense of humor and named me Peter Hayder," the store owners turned to each other and nodded. That was it! Hooray! Daylight was fading fast, and so were my children.

I grabbed the package, thanked the owners, and went back to the car. Where we spent another long time leafing through the book. Zero, zilch, nada. It was the kids' bedtime and we still had an hour and a half back home. We decided to cut our losses and hope for inspiration at a later date.

On the way, I wondered if I had ended up bypassing the trail, as Dan did mention that it was labyrinthine, but circular. Did I force the store owner's hand and end up with the first and last pieces? But still, there was no inkling of where to go next. Remembering the UV light mention about that French cache MrToasty told me about, I hauled out the blacklight from my closet and checked the first book on page 49. The page number was circled. I checked the second book. There's an address in Fredericksburg with a notation:

In the other book, there was a notation saying:

"Attic #1
Page #48"

And another saying:

"If all is safe, follow instructions to find me. P.E."

Stay tuned for part 2...

I called the storage place and asked if there was an office or something there; there's not.  I panicked a little bit - the notations meant nothing to me and I wasn't sure what to do if I encountered a lock.  Happily, I got a quick email from Jock Forsythe asking if I'd called that phone number yet.  (duh! on me)  I called it and there was a message saying that the number was out of service as of July, 2008, but legacy clients could call extension 2493 for service.  Hmm, that sounds like a combo lock, right?  DC helped further by saying that between the circled page number 49 and the A=?, I might be looking for unit A-49.  And The Fan said that usually the combinations are four numbers long.

Armed with all the information that I thought I needed, we headed back to Fredericksburg this morning to pick up the rest of the cache.  On the way, we passed an amusing little restaurant.

When we got to the storage place, we found unit A49 and our hopes soared.

And glory - there was a combination lock on there.  Check out what it was set to - "1944"!

We opened the lock using the "2493" code and found an ammo can.

Inside the can we found an envelope filled with money and a gold bar.

We also found instructions for the new Peter Hayder:

Interesting.  Since this cache was not picked up by 1998, it seems like they reassigned the Peter Hayder identity to the man currently working at Surer Risk.

We tried heading over to the Dietzel Motel just in case they still had that 10 year old reservation -

- but they had no reservation for Peter Hayder, and no packages for him.  I think this was the end of the trail.

Additionally, there was a phone number for an operative who shall remain unnamed.  I called him and he asked if we could meet in Austin on Monday so that he could give me some gold.  Real gold.  [Shocked]

I'll be sure to report back once that happens.  In the meantime, I hope this information helps those trying to uncover what's been going on here.
